As part of Curteis Webb’s commitment to reducing our impact, protecting and improving the environment around us, last week we took part in the Marine Conservations, Great British Beach Clean.
We regularly use a number of beaches throughout Kent and Sussex and it is important to us to be able to give back by getting involved with activities such as the beach clean. It was also important to us to be able to log the litter we found providing the vital data that will ensure the litter does not reach the beaches in future.
It was an extremely wind-swept day on Camber Sands, which made things challenging, but we managed to collect over 15kg of litter! A big surprise to us as we always thought this was a very clean beach in the first place but being involved with a beach clean opened our eyes to a couple of things.
Plastic is the problem. It was no coincidence that the majority of the litter collected was plastic and in the main, single use. From forks to vapes, water bottles to food containers, we found it all.
The litter problem could not be attributed to one ‘group’. We found everything from barbecues to kid’s toys, shoes to fishing paraphernalia and beer cans to wipes.
It was clear to us that we all have a part to play in reducing our impact, clearing up after ourselves and considering how we use these public spaces. If it was down to us then more would be done to stop companies using so much plastic in the first place and we are very pleased to see the ban on single use plastic come into place today but more can be done and Curteis Webb will continue to get involved with these events in order to improve the environment around us.
If this interests you, firstly get involved with a beach clean near you. It was a great way to meet like-minded people as well. Secondly, check out the Marine Conservations website, https://www.mcsuk.org/ you can read about the challenges to creating a cleaner, better protected, healthier ocean but also the great news of improvements that are already happening.
