INTERVIEWING THE PROFESSIONALS – PART 5:

Meet Rob Social Media Executive for a Professional Services firm in London

What is your job title?

Social Media Executive

How long have you worked for the business?

Nearly two years.

What is the best thing about your job?

The relative freedom I now have to manage all social media– I’m lucky that I work for a company with Partners who embrace new ideas and technology, which makes my job much more fun and interesting.

Give us a brief summary of your career so far..

I went to university to study marketing, enjoyed the digital side the most, started blogging, mainly about sport. I did a couple of internships in digital marketing and social media before securing the job where I am as a Social Media Assistant before being promoted this year to Executive.

When you were growing up, what did you want to be and why?

I wanted to be a footballer, I love sport! Not quite got the talent for it though and Digital has been my aim since my degree, the good news is it doesn’t feel like a second best.

What do you think are the key skills from your past that enabled you to get the job you have today?

The blogging and activity on social media whilst I was a uni really helped – gave me quite a good insight into what people wanted to read. Also really helped me develop my tone of voice.

What advice do you have for someone looking to start a career in Social Media.

Practice, write, write about what you enjoy, and that will help you get noticed as the passion will show through.

If you could tell your younger self anything, what would it be?

Errr, I’m not too sure really, maybe believe in yourself, I was my own worst critic.
