Meet Paul, Marketing Manager for a Retail Company based in Kent.
What is your job title?
Marketing Manager for a leading online retail company.
How long have you worked for the business?
3 years this summer. Wow, do you think I will get a watch soon?
What is the best thing about your job?
The people. I couldn’t do my job without working with such a great team of people. It really helps to get the buy in and enthusiasm of everyone when we have a big campaign going out. They are as excited as I am. Makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Give us a brief summary of your career so far..
I started working as a Marketing Assistant, doing admin and basically learning everything I could. Unfortunately, I was made redundant, but then moved to work with an Online Jewellery company. Spent a couple of years with them and progressed to Marketing Manager. Decided I wanted a bit of the country life so moved to Kent and never looked back.
When you were growing up, what did you want to be and why?
I wanted to be a Journalist. Although that didn’t quite come to plan, I do get to write a lot of copy in my role, so the best of both worlds.
What do you think are the key skills from your past that enabled you to get the job you have today?
A couple of years ago I completed a CIM Qualification – anyone who is able to do so, I would highly recommend. I am constantly trying to develop new skills and this has really helped me get to where I am.
What advice do you have for someone looking to start a career in Marketing.
Again, learn as much as you can from other people. You can’t beat hands on experience.
If you could tell your younger self anything, what would it be?
Its OK to fail. Just means you learn not to do something that way again. What is that famous saying about Thomas Eddison and lightbulbs. He didn’t fail, he found 1000 ways not to make a light bulb, but only needed one right way.
